Key 5--Perseverance: Be Persistent Not Stubborn

It was half time and the team was down by twenty points. The coach needed to inspire his players to stick in there and not quit.

"Did the Wright Brothers quit?" he yelled.

"No they didn't," his team replied.

"Did Abraham Lincoln quit?"

"No he did not."

"Did Thomas Edison Quit?"

"No he did not."

"Did Michael Jordan quit?"

"No he did not."

"Did Nate Mizersky quit?" The team gave the coach a puzzled look. "I asked if Nate Mizersky quit!" he yelled.

"Coach," one of the players replied. "We don't know who Nate Mizersky is."

"Of course you don't," the coach barked. "He quit."

Life doesn't give much to quitters. On the other hand, life has yet to figure out how to withhold anything from the person who refuses to quit. As Benjamin Disraeli said, "Nothing can resist the person who will stake his very existence on a cause." As long as we are growing, if we persist we will get whatever we set out for in life.

If We Don't Quit, It's Ours

Harland was a broke old man with nothing but a chicken recipe. He started running around trying to find someone to buy it. He got hundreds of no's before he got his first yes. He talked to over a thousand restaurants and he still hadn't broken the hundred dollar mark in chicken recipe sales.

Anyone in their right mind would have quit way before then. How many hundreds of no's in a row would it take before you started seriously doubting whether you would ever reach your chicken recipe sales dreams? Harland Sanders wouldn't quit and eventually, the man we know as Colonel Sanders did sell his recipe. His Kentucky Fried Chicken made him millions upon millions. His success came because he refused to quit. He refused to take no for an answer.

If we decide that we want something and we commit to never quitting until we have it, then it is done. It is ours. We can relax and go about the work of getting it. Sure, there will be problems along the way but we can know with absolute certainty that we will eventually have what it is that we seek if we refuse to quit and we continue to grow.

What Do We Get From Life?

I have heard it said that life will give us what we desire if we just want it bad enough. Certainly desire helps us but I have seen many people stop short of their heart's desire. No matter how bad we want something, if we don't persevere, we won't have it. We will become a frustrated victim of unwilling desire. We will fall into the trap of thinking that desire is bad because we didn't get what we wanted. It wasn't desire that frustrated us. It was quitting short of our desire.

We know life won't give us what's fair. Our fathers told us that growing up. We would say, "That's not fair" and they would say, "Life's not fair." I remember hearing that so many times growing up that I swore I would never say it to my children.
